LVC Music Student Earns Award for Contributions to Musical Arts and Education
Lebanon Valley College Music major Amy Yovanovich ’27 received a Certificate of Recognition for Distinguished Service to the Greater Harrisburg Community from The Essence Circle this past weekend at a reception before the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra performance. The Essence Circle is named for the late Dr. Anthony T. Leach ’73, Penn State University Professor Emeritus of Music and Music Education and Founding Director of Essence of Joy, which performs sacred and secular music from the African and African American choral traditions. The event is an annual gathering of people of color invited to attend a concert of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra Masterworks Concert Series.
Yovanovich received the award for her contribution to the musical arts and education as a vocal instructor, music educator, esteemed vocal artist, church music director, and the Executive Director of the State Street Academy of Music.
At State Street Academy of Music, Yovanovich oversees day-to-day operations and the faculty. She facilitates lessons for students interested in taking private music lessons in piano, voice, strings, guitar/ukulele, percussion, and cello. The organization also provides music lessons in other schools in the Harrisburg area.
In addition to inspiring young musicians, Yovanovich is also a talented artist. She has performed with the Pennsylvania Academy of Music Opera Theatre Workshop, Lancaster and Harrisburg Opera Companies, Reading Pops Orchestra, Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, and Fulton Opera House. She won the Gold Medal at the 1998 American Traditions Competition in Savannah, Georgia.
