Not Seeing the Program You Are Looking For?
The exposition will examine historical perspectives on women and their depiction in art in Edo Period Japan (1615–1858). Woodblock prints highlight female characters in literature and kabuki theater, courtesans and geisha of the Yoshiwara district, and wives and mothers from different social classes. Accompanying objects help immerse the viewer in this world. Looking beyond the bijinga genre (“pictures of beautiful women”), this exhibition shows how women in Edo society took active roles in their lives.
