Creative Writing

As a writer, your words set you apart—and so does the way you look at the world and process your thoughts into observations on the page.

LVC’s creative writing major will help you hone each of those skills, from idea to end product. You’ll learn from faculty who are adept at bringing out your best while giving you the skills to write, speak, and think with clarity and creativity. Our program is study-abroad-friendly—including our Creative Writing Study Abroad in Perugia, Italy—and features coursework in fiction, poetry, scriptwriting, creative nonfiction, gaming & communal storytelling, and more.

For students who qualify, need-based departmental scholarships are available to support your LVC goals. You can also apply for our Creative Writing Fellows Scholarship, which is awarded based on your portfolio.

Learn More About the Creative Writing Program

Creative writing at LVC takes so many forms: fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, script writing, journalism, digital media, and courses such as Gaming & Communal Story Telling, which connect students with indie game designers, local gaming networks, and even gaming conferences as they learn more about gaming as storytelling and even produce their own games! Our new hybrid Creative Writing + English course on Worldbuilding adds to the experience. It’s also easy to combine with other majors. Write for our student publications La Vie Collegienne and Green Blotter, contribute to our alumni magazine and website, and complete an internship that aligns with your interests. Your classes at LVC are just the beginning of a career ripe with possibilities.

Engage Your Craft

Take the Stage

Wig & Buckle, the oldest continually operating student group on campus, produces three to four shows a year. As a Creative Writing major, you can bring your writing to life through readings, performances, and campus events that give you the chance to share your voice with an audience.

Connect With Working Writers

It’s one thing to study a writer; it’s another to discuss the creative process face-to-face. Our “Writing: A Life” series brings visiting authors and professionals who offer fresh insight into the writing process and creative careers.

In Their Words

LVC’s English and Creative Writing program has given me so many opportunities to explore writing in both creative and professional settings. Through working as an editor on Green Blotter, contributing articles for La Vie, and interacting with visiting writers through the Writing: A Life program, I’ve been able to become a better writer and more well-rounded person. I am so grateful for all the support I’ve been giving by the professors here both in and out of the classroom, and I know the experiences I’ve had will serve me well in the future.
Katherine Buerke ’25, Creative Writing and English & Communications Double major with a minor in Applied French & Specialization in LVC Honors
LVC’s Humanities Department taught me not only how to be a thoughtful and curious writer but a good peer, someone who meets a work where it’s at and sees its potential; a good literary citizen; and a good teacher. As a student at LVC, I was mesmerized by my professors’ passion for the writing life. Now, as a graduate teaching assistant for my MFA program, I remember the lessons my LVC professors taught me and emulate them for my students. Without LVC’s investment in my creative potential, I wouldn’t be who I am today.

(The job market) is all about how adaptive you are and how quickly you can pick up something new. If you are attentive to language, interested in communications, curious about the world, and willing to see something through, you’re set; and that is what creative writing can teach you.
