Music Department Opera: Pirates of Penzance
Libretto by W.S. Gilbert
Music by Arthur Sullivan
Arranged by Peter Murray
Welcome to the hottest resort town on the coast, where the yacht club is exclusive, the marina crew is chaotic, and summer romance is always one bad decision away.
In this vibrant 1980s inspired reimagining of The Pirates of Penzance, the “pirates” are less swashbuckling criminals and more dockside rebels, a ragtag crew of marina workers, beach musicians, lifeguards, and professional troublemakers who rule the boardwalk with charm, mischief, and absolutely no regard for authority.
Frederic, a young apprentice desperate to leave the chaos behind and finally live by the rules, thinks he’s found the perfect future when he falls head-over-heels for Mabel, the bright and spirited daughter of the town’s wealthy yacht club elite. Unfortunately, love gets complicated when mistaken identities, bizarre technicalities, overdramatic authority figures, and an entire resort full of eccentric vacationers get involved.
Set against a backdrop of neon sunsets, regatta parties, beach concerts, and marina mayhem, this fresh take on Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic operetta transforms Pirates of Penzance into a nostalgic summer comedy bursting with romance, rebellion, and ridiculous fun.
Because at this resort, everybody’s looking for a good time!
