History & Secondary Teacher Certification Degree Requirements

Degree Requirements for Social Studies Secondary Education Teacher Certification

Designed for history or politics majors who seek certification to teach at the secondary level (grades 7–12). Students can pursue two teacher certifications. The first is a Certification in Social Studies, which prepares candidates to teach seven subject areas: history, geography, civics and government, psychology, sociology, anthropology, and economics in Pennsylvania secondary schools. The second is a Certification in Citizenship Education, which prepares candidates to teach four subject areas: history, geography, civics and government, and economics in Pennsylvania secondary schools.

For most students, we recommend the Certification in Social Studies because it prepares them to teach more subject areas and is recognized outside the state of Pennsylvania.
