Capt. Charles Cooper Don Quixote Scholarship
The Capt. Charles Cooper Don Quixote Scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need; provides evidence of academic excellence; exemplifies strong character and leadership. Scholarship aims to enhance the student’s non-English language skills in his/her mission to become an ambassador of goodwill in making our world a better place. Captain Charles T. Cooper III served as a WWII naval officer before teaching Spanish at LVC for 14 years, where he also served as chair of the foreign languages department.
Richard A. Joyce Fund for History & Political Science
The Richard A. Joyce Fund provides for faculty professional development and faculty-student sponsored initiatives in or on the Western tradition with an emphasis on European history. Richard Joyce dedicated 32 years to teaching European History at LVC.
Elizabeth M. Geffen Scholarship in History
The Elizabeth M. Geffen Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior who is taking at least three history courses, maintains a GPA of 3.0, and who has contributed significantly to the development of the department. A scholar of American history, Dr. Elizabeth Geffen served as professor of history from 1958-1983 when she retired as chair of the department.
John and Carol Kearney Senior Prize in English Communications
The John and Carol Kearney Senior Prize is awarded to a graduating student who best exemplifies the principles and practices of a liberal arts based communications program. Dr. John Kearney is professor emeritus of English at LVC where he taught English literature and communications for 35 years, helping young people understand and appreciate Shakespeare, Chaucer, Dickens and Eliot.
Maud P. Laughlin Scholarship in History and Political Science
The Maud P. Laughlin Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior majoring in social studies. Maud Laughlin was professor of history and political science and chair of the department from 1946-1957. Laughlin Hall is named in her honor.
John D. Norton Endowed Book Fund
The John D. Norton Endowed Book Fund is awarded to a student studying political science to provide support for the purchase of books. Dr. John Norton is professor emeritus of political science.
Agnes Boyle O’Donnell Literature Award
The Agnes Boyle O’Donnell Literature Award is awarded to an outstanding junior English major, giving preference to a student with a deep understanding of and appreciation for literature. Dr. Agnes Boyle O’Donnell taught English at LVC for 26 years before her retirement in 1987.
George R. Struble Memorial Award in English
The George R. Struble Memorial Award is awarded to a senior who has achieved the highest cumulative grade point average in the Department of English. Dr. George Struble came to LVC in 1931 and became chair of the English Department in 1949. Although he retired in 1970, he taught at least one course until 1984, marking a 53-year teaching career.
Perry Troutman and Vivian Schreffler Troutman Scholarship
The Perry Troutman and Vivian Schreffler Troutman Scholarship is awarded to a student for current tuition. Dr. Perry Troutman is professor emeritus of religion.
