New Student Orientation

Welcome!

We are thrilled that you have decided to join the Lebanon Valley College community. You are joining an active, supportive, and inclusive community of learners and scholars who are here to help you excel academically, socially, and professionally.

Take advantage of all that we offer: attend events, meet new people, ask questions, and challenge yourself to go further and do more than you ever thought possible.

Our Orientation Program is filled with activities to help you navigate campus and adjust to college life and expectations.

New Student Orientation: August 24–27, 2023

Orientation officially begins on Thursday, August 24, for first-year residential and commuter students and new transfer students. Residential students will move into their residence halls on Thursday, August 24.

Students are encouraged to attend all Orientation events. Please note events that are marked with a (REQUIRED) are required of all incoming first-year and transfer students.

Attendance will be taken for required events.

Although all Orientation activities are open to every new student, the following keys note group-specific events:

  • (C) events required for commuting students
  • (T) events required for transfer students

Orientation Schedule

7 a.m.–12 p.m. | Morning Arrival Check-in (REQUIRED for all incoming residential students)
Red Lot A, North Campus (see map).
Students and families arrive to campus and check in during their designated time slot. Residence hall keys will be distributed here.

Join us at check-in to pick up your Student ID card, first-year mentor information, orientation t-shirt, orientation name tag and parent and family meal tickets.

  • Vehicle Sticker Distribution Table: Stop by the Campus Safety table to pick up your vehicle sticker for parking access on campus. Additional stickers are available at the Campus Safety Office (143 N. College Ave.).
  • Student ID Photos: If you have not already submitted a photo for your Student ID, stop by the table to get your picture taken. 
  • Other Resource Tables: Financial Aid, Xfinity, Lebanon Federal Credit Union

Peace Garden
Families are invited to stop by anytime during one of the water ceremonies. You can take part in this unique and meaningful LVC tradition of connecting home and campus by bringing your water from home to symbolize the transition to your new “home”. The Photo Club will have a photo booth for students and families in the Peace Garden during the Water Ceremony.

New students who completed the Summer Pathways program and students who signed up for Dutchmen First, LVC’s first-generation student program, are invited to enjoy an ice cream bar and de-stress with the staff in CASEM. If you are a first-generation student (neither parent has earned a bachelor’s degree) and interested in potentially joining the D1st family, please join us as well!

1:15–1:30 p.m. | Annual Children of Alumni Photos (Legacies)

All children of parents or grandparents who attended LVC are invited to participate in this annual tradition. We will take a group photo of all new legacies and photos with any of their family members who attended LVC.

 

1:30–2 p.m. | Class Photo (REQUIRED for all incoming students)

The incoming students will gather for their first LVC photo. All incoming students are invited to participate, including transfer and commuter students. Be sure to wear your orientation t-shirt for the photo!

 

1:30–3 p.m. | Family Drop-In & Depart Campus

Before departing campus, parents and families are invited to enjoy a snack for the road and to connect with College staff and administrators. Parents and families will also have the opportunity to write an encouraging letter to be distributed to their student during their first week of classes. A special gift will also be available for purchase to be delivered with the letter (ranging from $5-10).

Learn about what every college student needs to know about healthy decision making with this interactive presentation.

Depart from Miller Chapel steps
Forgot any essentials? Take a bus trip to Target for your last-minute needs. This is a private shop event exclusively for incoming LVC students.

9–11 a.m. | Opening Convocation (REQUIRED for all incoming students)

The tradition of the Opening Convocation marks the formal opening of the academic year.  All new students are led through a receiving line of Lebanon Valley College faculty, administration, and trustees in full academic regalia.

 

11 a.m.–1 p.m. | Kickoff to the First-Year Experience (FYE), FYM Meetings, & Lunch (REQUIRED for all incoming students)

Students enrolled in FYE 111, FYE 112, or FYE 113 will be introduced to their classmates, mentors, and instructors in their First-Year Experience course.

4–5:15 p.m. | Healthy Relationships in College (REQUIRED for all incoming students)

Join our community partners, Lebanon SAARC (Sexual Assault Resource and Counseling Center), for a discussion about how to cultivate healthy relationships during your time at LVC.

8–9 p.m. | The Great DuBois

The Great DuBois is a fast-paced, all ages, variety show showcasing incredible feats of juggling, hula hoops, unicycle, aerial, circus stunts, contortion, magic, and audience interaction all wrapped in a blanket of comedy! The show features artists as seen on “NBC’s Tonight Show with Jay Leno”, “Late Night with David Letterman” “Pippin” on Broadway, and the feature film, “The Greatest Showman” starring Hugh Jackman.

Come enjoy an opportunity for a group watch of the film, Kedi, which is one of the Common Connections for this year’s FYE theme.

Purchase course-required textbooks in a variety of formats, including new, used, and digital books. Find LVC apparel and gifts, as well as school supplies, gift cards, and best-selling books.

SAAC Book Drive

Join members of LVC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in encouraging children in Lebanon County to read! When you arrive on campus to start the year, please bring a new or gently used children’s book with you.

Collection bins will be set up in Mund College Center, Arnold Sports Center, Miller Chapel, and Bishop Library through the end of September (National Literacy Month) to receive donations. Books will be shared with local schools, child care centers, shelters, and food pantries.
