Mathematics Mission, Goals, & Objectives

The Department of Mathematical Sciences

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is dedicated to the ideals of liberal education. We strive to develop in our students enduring fundamental abilities of effective lifelong learning: precise reading, sound reasoning, and clear communication. More than any particular facts or theories, we emphasize that language, logic, and understanding are the heart and the true power of mathematics. These principles help guide the design and implementation of general education, service courses as well as the curricula for our majors.

Mathematics Program Goals and Objectives

Program Goal 1: A graduate from the Mathematics program will be able to read with precision for understanding.

  • Read and apply a definition
  • Read and apply a theorem
  • Read and apply an algorithm
  • Read and evaluate a proof

Program Goal 2: A graduate from the Mathematics program will be able to explore and analyze a problem.

  • Identify and understand key variables or entities, and relationships among them
  • Identify assumptions
  • Find and analyze sub-problems or related simpler problems

Program Goal 3: A graduate from the Mathematics program will be able to synthesize a solution to a problem.

  • Construct a multi-step strategy
  • Evaluate the success of a problem-solving approach
  • Apply abstract methods to concrete problems

Program Goal 4: A graduate from the Mathematics program will be able to produce clear, precise writing to create a logically sound line of reasoning.

  • Organize writing to aid understanding
  • Use standard mathematical vocabulary in a natural way
  • Write with precision and exactitude
  • Skillfully communicate meaning in an easy-to-follow way
