School Counseling Program Mission

The mission of the School Counseling Program at LVC is to prepare empathic school counselors who have a strong foundation of knowledge, and who are able to exhibit proficient counseling skills in a wide range of school settings. The School Counseling Program at LVC reinforces the importance of upholding ethical standards, and encourages students to be growth-oriented, professional, and flexible. Furthermore, the School Counseling Program at LVC emphasizes multicultural counseling, diversity, and social justice advocacy.

 

Program Skill-Based Objectives

  1. Students must develop an understanding of Professional Counseling Orientation and Ethical Practice.
  2. Students must develop an understanding of Social and Cultural Diversity
  3. Students must develop an understanding of Human Growth and Development
  4. Students must develop an understanding of Career Development
  5. Students must develop an understanding of Counseling and Helping Relationships
  6. Students must develop an understanding of Group Counseling and Group Work
  7. Students must develop an understanding of Assessment and Testing
  8. Students must develop an understanding of Research and Program Evaluation

 

School Counseling Program Skill-Based Objectives:

  1. Acquisition: Gathering Information.
    1. Students will demonstrate effective comprehension of information.
    2. Students will demonstrate effective information literacy skills.
  2. Assembly: Bringing together different pieces of information.
    1. Students will articulate the relationship between theory and data.
    2. Students will synthesize information from different sources when developing conclusions.
  3. Analysis: Examining collected information to develop deep understanding.
    1. Students will analyze and interpret data appropriately.
    2. Students will evaluate the strengths and weakness of methods, theories, and/or evidence.
  4. Application: Utilizing obtained understanding in novel contexts.
    1. Students will use scientific principles to solve problems.
    2. Students will be prepared to create an appropriate application for post-graduate placement aligned with personal interests.
  5. Articulation: Communicating knowledge on a given topic.
    1. Students will communicate effectively in written form.
    2. Students will communicate effectively in oral form.
