Cyber Defense and Homeland Security Program Goals & Objectives


Program Goal 1: Introduce and build students’ intellectual and practical skills in physical and cyber-related risks to U.S. government, military, and private sector assets. 

  • Analyze tactics and methods for mitigating threats and risks to U.S. homeland security and cyber defense. 
  • Identify cyber and physical threats, risks, and vulnerabilities within the broader context of international law and global governance. 
  • Identify contingency and crisis response measures and develop risk analyses. 
  • Analyze the importance of open-source intelligence, social media communications, and commercial innovation in cyber and physical defense. 


Program Goal 2: Strengthen and reinforce students’ intellectual and practical skills in adhering to ethical principles in the homeland security enterprise and cyber defense. 

  • Identify privacy concerns and ethical principles related to homeland security and cyber defense. 
  • Analyze best practices and standards to recognize and formulate effective critical and analytical written and oral communication skills. 
  • Compare strategic plans and ethical solutions in response to threat actors according to best practices and leading compliance measures. 
  • Identify critical thinking and analytic techniques consistent with ethical use of open-source intelligence (OSINT) collections and analysis of publicly available information.  


Program Goal 3: Demonstrate homeland security and cyber defense policies, procedures, and techniques. 

  • Apply strategic planning to help organizations prepare for physical and cyber incidents and understand the importance of public-private collaboration to mitigate risk. 
  • Identify security sectors in the cyber-physical connection in U.S. critical infrastructure.  
  • Apply techniques and tools used to defend government and private sector organizations from physical and cyberattacks. 
  • Apply critical skills in OSINT analysis or the fundamentals of computer programming using Python programming language.
