  • Recognize stress. Remember that students react to pressure differently, and provide space for them to process.

  • Be the voice of reason. Not all stress is bad. Reassure your student that they can do it, and this period of intense stress will not last forever. In the meantime, remind your student that challenges can help us to stay sharp and focused.

  • Make sure your student is not ignoring their health during this time. This includes eating healthy and practicing self-care, which could be as simple as taking some time to be outside or stopping for a break.

  • Listen to your student. This may include listening between the lines. Your student may need to share or vent, they may be seeking specific advice, or they may simply want to know that someone is trying to understand and empathize with what they are experiencing.

  • Help your student with a call to action. In times of constant change, we often don’t know where to start or what to do. Encourage your student to make a list of everything they need to accomplish and prioritize it. Having an action plan provides a starting point and puts the student in control.
