Volunteering During a Pandemic: MacKenzie Webb ’22

Lebanon Valley College student MacKenzie Webb participates in a community service reading program

MacKenzie Webb ’22, an early childhood and special education double major, has enjoyed giving back to her community for as long as she can remember. Her time spent volunteering skyrocketed even more when she joined Gamma Sigma Sigma during the fall of 2019.

Gamma Sigma Sigma is a national service sorority with multiple LVC members who participate in an array of projects. However, members had to change a few things and adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Every year, they participate in Read Across America Day on March 2. This day is meant to promote and celebrate reading amongst young children. This year, Webb and other members participated in Read Across America Day virtually.

“We adopted classrooms from Cleona Elementary, grades K-2. We read ‘Oh the Places You’ll Go’ by Dr. Seuss and held a discussion about college preparation and career readiness, as well as encouraging students to follow their dreams,” she said. “We worked with 315 students. It was a great event!”

A new activity that Webb and her sorority sisters started doing is assembling kits for students at LVC who are in isolation due to COVID-19. So far, they have made around 50 kits.

“The kits included some activity pages like crosswords and word puzzles, hand sanitizer, encouraging notes, and the most important thing—snacks. We gave out gummies, applesauce, chips, pretzels, candy pop-tarts, granola bars, and juice.”

Webb’s community service doesn’t stop there. Recently, she sent cards to local nursing homes and made fleece blankets for the Children’s Resource Center, which provides services for children who have suffered trauma.

Webb said that she plans to continue volunteering on her own time and with her sorority, despite the challenges that the pandemic has brought to the table.
