And the Beat Goes On: Richard J. Watson Opens at the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery

Artwork for And the Beat Goes On exhibition

And the Beat Goes On: Richard J. Watson will run from Sept. 2–Oct. 23, 2022, at the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery of Lebanon Valley College. This exhibit features works by the Philadelphia artist Richard J. Watson, currently artist-in-residence and exhibitions manager at the African American Museum in Philadelphia.

Incorporating found objects and materials in his mixed media collage, his work resonates with his personal history and experience. “In so many ways, I feel that I live my life much like the composition of a piece of music. Tones, rhythms, cadence, volume, and movement are terms that could easily describe both.” Watson’s art makes connections between past and present, the personal and universal, individual and community. Rooted in his own experiences in the civil rights movement, Watson creates art as an agent of social transformation.

The opening reception for And the Beat Goes On: Richard J. Watson will take place on Friday, Sept. 2, 5–7 p.m. in Zimmerman Recital Hall of the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery. The reception is free and open to the public.

In conjunction with the exhibition, artist Watson will provide a Gallery talk on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m.

A faculty jazz performance for And the Beat Goes On: Richard J. Watson will be held Thursday, Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. LVC faculty and adjunct faculty members Ryan Kuhns (bass), Jeff Lovell (Piano), Larry Marshall (drums), Justin Morell (guitar), and Tom Strohman (sax) will present various jazz styles with historical commentary.

Gallery hours are Wednesday, 5–8 p.m., Thursday and Friday, 1–4:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m.–5 p.m., and by appointment for groups. Please contact the Gallery at 717-867-6445 or gallery@lvc.edu to arrange a private Gallery talk for your school or organization.
