A Summer to Remember
Lucas Cappelli ’21, a business administration and economics double major, made the most of his pandemic summer by interning at the Roller Coaster Capital of the World, also known as the amusement park Cedar Point, in Sandusky, Ohio.
His summer in sunny Ohio was made possible with the aid of the Steven J. and Wendie DiMatteo Holsinger Internship Fund, which provides financial assistance to students for reasonable costs associated with an internship, including a stipend and travel and living expenses.
“The fund allowed me not to have to worry about money while away from home. I could shop for groceries while taking full advantage of my internship without feeling like I was tight on money,” said Cappelli, who spent six weeks in Ohio instead of the original 12 due to the pandemic.
At Cedar Point, Cappelli worked as a merchandise auditor intern to manage over/short reports from the previous day for all the stores, conduct random audits on the associates, and overlook the stores’ cash-handling activity using various information systems.
Through his daily tasks, Cappelli gained invaluable experiences in problem-solving, creative thinking, and professional communication.
“Every day, I had to figure out why certain merchandise locations did not balance at the end of the day in terms of their cash amounts,” said Cappelli. “I had to put pieces together to figure out what happened. I also sat in on meetings and gave my input. These types of interactions are part of the real world that school cannot teach you.”
In addition to professional experiences, Cappelli made valuable connections and memories. From befriending fellow interns to walking through the park daily, Cappelli is thankful for the summer internship.
Refreshed and energized by his summer in Ohio, Cappelli continues to explore various areas of interest such as finance, accounting, and business analytics while looking forward to graduation in May.
“For now, I want to keep my options open and gain more experience before deciding on a career path,” said Cappelli. “I’m not sure where life after graduation plans to take me, but pursuing my MBA is something I’m considering.”
