Neuroscience Department Mission

Program Goals

The goal of the Neuroscience Program is to develop students’ theoretical knowledge of the biological bases of human behavior in order to effectively problem-solve in the real world. Our curriculum prepares students to be well versed in the principles and techniques of neuroscience, to have the intellectual training to investigate novel concepts, to have the ability to learn independently and to interpret and articulate their findings clearly. Graduates from this program are prepared for applied entry positions in the workforce as well as graduate and professional studies in a broad range of areas such as neuroscience, psychology, biology, health professions, and education.

Curricular Objectives

The Neuroscience Program integrates a classroom-based background in the principles of psychology and biology while providing opportunities to become involved in the field of neuroscience in an applied manner. Students achieve this through coursework involving the application of the scientific method in the laboratory. Further, many neuroscience majors gain more practical knowledge through participation in independent and collaborative research projects under the guidance and supervision of individual faculty members. Also, neuroscience majors have access to an internship program, which allows students to receive college credit for work experience relevant to their particular interests within the field of neuroscience. Finally, in both their coursework and independent endeavors, students learn to integrate information, synthesize ideas into a coherent whole, and communicate research findings. The Neuroscience Program at Lebanon Valley College produces students with a strong background in neuroscience, while also maintaining a flexible atmosphere that allows students to pursue their individualized interests.

Goals and Objectives

  1. Students will master the principles of neuroscience.
    • Students will demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts in neuroscience.

    • Students will integrate the knowledge of the cellular/systems with the behavioral/cognitive aspects of neuroscience. 

  2. Students will be proficient researchers.

    • Students will articulate the reciprocal relationship between theory and research.

    • Students will develop scientific hypotheses logically from previous research. 

    • Students will develop and/or utilize appropriate methodology (including research design and measures) to test a scientific hypothesis. 

  3. Students will use analytical reasoning and synthesize ideas effectively.

    • Students will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of neuroscience methods, theories, and/or evidence.

    • Students will use scientific reasoning to interpret phenomena. 

    • Students will demonstrate integrative thinking and problem-solving. 

  4. Students will be effective communicators. 

    • Students will communicate well in written form. 

    • Students will communicate well in oral form.
