Environmental Science Mission, Goals, & Objectives

Environmental Science Department Mission

The Environmental Science Program aims to produce graduates who will apply the interdisciplinary principles of environmental science, who are proficient problem solvers with the ability to design, conduct, and interpret scientific experiments, who can evaluate the most important environmental problems facing the world, who can effectively communicate scientific knowledge, and who maintain honest academic conduct.

Learning Goals and Objectives

Goal 1: The students will apply the interdisciplinary principles of environmental science.

  • Objective 1: Apply an understanding of environmental concepts from ecology, chemistry, geology, and physics to real-world problems.
  • Objective 2: Analyze the complex interactions within and between environmental systems
  • Objective 3: Analyze and evaluate the most important environmental problems facing the world.

Goal 2: Students will be proficient problem solvers

  • Objective 1: Demonstrate the ability to design an appropriate experiment or field study employing the scientific method.
  • Objective 2: Apply appropriate scientific techniques
  • Objective 3: Interpret results from scientific studies.

Goal 3: Students will be effective scientific communicators

  • Objective 1: Communicate scientific knowledge in oral presentations.
  • Objective 2: Communicate scientific knowledge effectively in writing using appropriate references and collected data.
