Orientation 2009
Disability Services offers a variety of resources

If you are a student with a disability, arriving at college is a testimony to your determination to overcome obstacles and to meet new challenges head on. The Office of Disability Services is a resource on campus that can help!

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 mandates colleges to ensure freedom from discrimination and equivalent access to all programs and services of the college to qualified students with learning disabilities, AD/HD, psychiatric disorders, and chronic health impairments. Reasonable accommodations, such as having extended time on tests, taking tests in a distraction-reduced environment, lecture notes provided by a student in good academic standing and gaining access to books on tape, are available for students who have a documented disability.

Dr. Yvonne Foster, the Director of Disability Services, provides academic advising adjunctive to that offered by faculty advisors, counseling on disability-related issues and one-on-one assistance in helping students with disabilities to develop better study strategies, test-taking skills, and self-advocacy skills.

Dr. Foster plays an important role in helping faculty and administrators on campus understand the nature of a disability, the impact of a disability on learning, and the legal mandates for access. The Office of Disability Services is open Monday through Friday. Appointments can be made by calling 867-6071 or by e-mailing foster@lvc.edu
