ESS 110. Principles of Geology.   An introduction to the dynamic Earth and the interrelations of both the internal and external processes which shape it. This course offers an overview of the history and evolution of Earth in the context of plate tectonics. It explores the nature of volcanoes, earthquakes, mountain building processes, weathering, erosion, and the various origins and compositions of Earth materials. Opportunities for hands-on inquiry are provided for the student in both the laboratory and in the field. 4 credits.

ESS 120. Principles of Astronomy.   An introduction to the forces that shape the solar system and the universe as well as the tools used to observe them. It presents a comprehensive review of the modern scientific view of the physical universe. Topics include the history of astronomy, astronomical technology, and the structure and evolution of astrophysical systems including the solar system, Sun, other stars, and galaxies. Laboratory work is required. 4 credits. {Cross listed as PHY 120.}
