Lebanon Valley College's HAPPINESS Colloquium film series will screen Andrew Shapter's documentary, "Happiness Is," at the Allen Theatre in Annville, Tues. Oct. 2 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $1 for non-LVC students and $3 for the general public. The film is free to LVC students.
The film begins with the Declaration of Independence's assertion that all people "are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Americans are raised to believe in their right to find happiness, but Shapter asks the question, "What is happiness?"
Throughout the documentary, Shapter travels across the United States speaking to all kinds of Americans, from musicians and scientists to philanthropists and every day citizens. He asks for their definitions of happiness and an explanation of what makes them happy. "Happiness Is" attempts to discover the road to happiness, or at least how people venture to get there.
HAPPINESS is a year-long integrated series of guest speakers, roundtable discussions, films and courses that will consider the meaning and importance of happiness as a psychological, physiological, social and cultural phenomenon. It involves presentations by speakers from a number of disciplines who approach the theme from the standpoints of the arts, the wellness of body and mind, the demands of a consumer economy, the expectations and duties of political life, and the broad philosophical questions of human flourishing.
