Recent sociology graduate Luciana G. Pacheco-McEvoy ’12 is employed at the San Diego County Office of Education for a program called PASS (Promoting Student Achievement and Success) that is grant funded by AmeriCorps. She is working at a middle school in Vista, Calif., in a low-income neighborhood that is highly impacted by violence and gangs. Pacheco-McEvoy’s job is to mentor 25 students that are defined as "at-risk."
She writes, “I really enjoy the work that I am doing and find it very meaningful. It definitely has its mixture of emotions and experiences, but overall so far, it has been a great experience. I am learning different skills, such as, mediating conflicts between students, organizing group sessions, planning and implementing presentations, but most importantly how to have a positive influence in someone's young life.”
