LVC Study Abroad Expands to China, New London Location
12.20.12 |
A big part of learning about the world is venturing out and experiencing it firsthand. Lebanon Valley’s study abroad office enables students to explore international destinations and gain an excellent education from foreign institutions at the same time. This fall, those destinations are expanding to include options in Beijing, China, and a new location in London, England.

“After a few years of researching opportunities for study in nontraditional locations, we have now entered into a partnership with Capital Normal University beginning fall semester 2013,” said Jill Russell, director of study abroad. “For our students who will soon be entering the work force, gaining familiarity with the cities, culture, and language of this foreign power will boost any career aspirations they may hold.”

China currently has the fastest growing economy in the world, and Beijing is a city central to its success. LVC students earning a degree in any major will benefit from studying Mandarin and other courses, taught in English, which explore the history, culture, business, and politics of this global power. More invaluable, students have the opportunity to participate in part-time internships with American-owned companies, transnational companies, and Chinese companies who appreciate English speakers.

LVC music professor Eric Fung is a native of Hong Kong, China. Though he has only been to Beijing once, he has some advice for LVC students exploring his home country: “Go everywhere you can go and eat anything you can handle. Stay away from McDonald’s, KFC, and Starbucks.” Fung says that is his own motto when traveling to a new country.

LVC students will live in on-campus housing with American students as well, but will have the chance to assimilate with international students through the use of campus facilities and attendance at campus events. Guided field trips around Beijing and an extended excursion to Shanghai are also included.

While the China program is a new one from Lebanon Valley students, scores of Dutchmen have traveled to London for study abroad programs over the years. This coming fall semester, students will embark to a new program partnership at Kingston University, just south of London.

“Students will have more course options available to them in our new location at Kingston and will be able to live in on-campus residence halls that will encourage more interaction with the many international and domestic students enrolled at the university,” Russell said.

A wide range of courses offered will fulfill many LVC general education requirements and several major and minor requirements as well. Students will have many travel opportunities in and around London. Weekend travel to European countries is convenient, affordable, and encouraged.

Kingston University is located in Kingston-Upon-Thames, about 25 minutes south of London city center – a quick ride by train. Kingston-Upon-Thames is a sizable borough with nearly 150,000 residents and shops, entertainment, and rail/bus service all around England.

All LVC students are reminded that the deadline to apply for all fall 2013 study abroad programs is March 15. For additional information about these and LVC’s 14 additional destinations, please visit www.lvc.edu/study-abroad.
