Becky Chan ’11 an Experience Designer in Harrisburg
10.23.12 |
Becky Chan ’11 is currently an experience designer at Red Privet in Harrisburg, Pa. Following the design concentration of the digital communications major while at LVC, Chan now helps Red Privet design online, user-centered solutions.

“I work on just about every aspect of designing interfaces and solutions. Because I work at a small company, we are expected to wear many hats, so having a breadth of knowledge has helped me to do everything from write annotations for developers, design animations for a children's mobile app, write usability test plans, and much more,” said Chan.

At her job, she is expected to learn from co-workers and take on all tasks. Red Privet is a design company that puts an emphasis on usability, a method of testing and improving a system or object. They manage full, enterprise-scale web product strategy, design, development, and adoption campaigns for other businesses. They deal with small companies as well as Fortune 500 firms.

“You never know what the client will ask of you, and having a little bit of knowledge in a lot of places is a good starting point for doing something new,” she said.

A design concentrator in digital communications, Chan believes that every class that she took in the digiCOM discipline has benefitted her work.

“I’m glad that since my first digiCOM course, we have been pushed to think about the user and to test our solutions,” said Chan. “This has made all the difference in what I do. Also, fail early, fail often.”

To other students, she said, “learn as much as you can. Your professors, peers, and the time you have in college are resources that aren’t as readily available to you once you leave school.”
