Abby Tomlinson ’12 Finds Communications Work at Hershey Company
10.23.12 |
Abby Tomlinson ’12, a digital communications major with a concentration in communications, is the current iQ Curator for The Hershey Company.

“I manage all of Hershey's research from around the world that is posted on the internal website for all employees to access. I create an abstract and choose key slides from their PowerPoint to be published,” explained Tomlinson.

The Hershey Company is North America’s leading manufacturer of chocolates. Located in Hershey, Pa., this Fortune 500 Company has operations in over 90 countries. Working for them almost directly after graduation, Tomlinson has relied on the breadth of her major.

“Being a communications concentrator, I was able to take English and editing courses that helped [me] to proofread correctly and effectively,” said Tomlinson. “Outside of my concentration, digiCOM taught me to think critically and often outside the box. I have a lot of creative license in my position and it's fun to use both my design skills and business knowledge.”

Like many digital communications grads, Tomlinson noted her experience in her capstone class as being very valuable in the working world.

“Capstone provided me with that extra 'umph' to impress my job interviewers. It gave me real world experience while still in school. It's a great way to learn to work independently and also how to work in a group environment, which most jobs are very interested in,” she said.

Tomlinson encourages current students to pursue a wide variety of skills. “Don't put all your eggs into one basket. Just because I was a communications concentrator, I didn't stop taking design classes or other special topics classes that I thought could help me in the long run. As it turns out, my design knowledge is a great leg up in the real world and that little extra business knowledge is incredibly helpful.”
