Gabriel Bol Deng will present "Rebuilding Hope in Sudan" at Lebanon Valley College's Lutz Hall of the Blair Music Center on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. as part of the Colloquium Series on HAPPINESS. The presentation follows a Sept. 4 screening of the film "Rebuilding Hope" at the Allen Theatre in Annville. Admission to the presentation is free and open to the public.
Deng's presentation is a summation of the journey he took to flee Sudan in order to escape civil war. He will speak about myths surrounding America's perception of Africa and Sudan as well as the causes for the Sudanese civil wars and the conflict in Darfur. In addition, Deng will provide information on gender roles in Sudan and how access to water affects education.
John Gibble, LVC adjunct instructor of sociology, attended Deng's presentation at another venue, saying it was "one of the most moving [presentations] I've ever been to."
Deng was featured in the film "Rebuilding Hope," and is the founder and executive director of the Hope for Ariang Foundation. Hope for Ariang works to make education accessible to children and adults in South Sudan by removing cultural and economic barriers.
HAPPINESS is a year-long integrated series of guest speakers, roundtable discussions, films and courses that will consider the meaning and importance of happiness as a psychological, physiological, social and cultural phenomenon. It involves presentations by speakers from a number of disciplines who approach the theme from the standpoints of the arts, the wellness of body and mind, the demands of a consumer economy, the expectations and duties of political life, and the broad philosophical questions of human flourishing.
