Former LVC President Stephen MacDonald Serves on Physical Therapy Accreditation Committee

Former Lebanon Valley College president Dr. Stephen C. MacDonald has been appointed by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) to serve as a member of a 10-person Criteria Revision Group (CRG) to propose modifications to the national standards for accreditation in physical therapy and physical therapy assistant programs in the United States.

The CRG met Sept. 20-22 at the American Physical Therapy Association headquarters in Alexandria, Va. to reexamine the criteria and accreditation process for higher education institutions preparing physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapy assistants (PTAs). Furthermore, the CRG will develop a draft and submit a proposal of revised criteria for PT and PTA programs to the PT and PTA communities for comment and reaction. The iterative process is expected to continue through 2014.

In addition to Dr. MacDonald, CRG members include faculty and administrators from Creighton University, the University of Utah, the University of North Texas, the University of North Dakota, Neumann College, Carroll Community College, and Northern Essex Community College, and clinicians from the District of Columbia and Arkansas.

Dr. MacDonald, a historian by training, became deeply involved in the development of LVC’s doctor of physical therapy program and was a direct participant in the program’s application for initial accreditation in 2003. He was invited to join CAPTE as a commissioner from 2007 to 2011, and is a current member of CAPTE teams conducting on-site visits to institutions applying for initial or renewed accreditation.
