Summer Art Exhibit Opens Friday
07.05.12 |
Lebanon Valley College’s Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery will open its first summer exhibition, “Selections from the Permanent Collection,” July 6. The opening reception for the exhibition will be held Saturday, July 7 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

The show will feature selections from the gallery’s permanent collection that embody elements of abstraction. The works originate from the late 19th century to the present and were created by well-known artists such as Pablo Picasso and Miriam Schapiro, popular regional artists such as Eva Bender and Lawrence Von Barann, and LVC art professor Michael Pittari.

Jessica Hinkley ’12 is curating the show as part of her spring 2012 internship at the gallery. Hinkley began by becoming familiar with the works in the permanent collection. “I compiled a large list of these works, which I thought would also benefit the education and aesthetic pleasure of a larger audience,” Hinkley explained. Unlike years past, Hinkley felt that this exhibit from the permanent collection should have a theme. After looking at the works on her list, she decided to focus on pieces with elements of abstraction. The work involved in curating the exhibit went on to include writing labels and abstracts for each piece and hanging the show.

Hinkley’s internship provided her with additional experiences researching acquired works, cataloging new pieces, and publicizing the gallery. She was able to serve on the Gallery Advisory Council and learned much about art auctions. All of these opportunities will help her find her dream job as a curator or administrator in a gallery or museum. “I really think my internship will benefit me as I work towards that goal,” Hinkley remarked.

The permanent collection at LVC contains works from the 16th century to the present. It is supported by members of the Friends of the Gallery and other generous sponsors. To give a gift or become a member, click here.

Summer gallery hours are Friday, July 6 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional information is available online or by contacting gallery@lvc.edu or 717-867-6445. “Selections from the Permanent Collection” closes August 12. The next exhibit, “A Feast for the Eyes,” will open August 31.
