The Luckenbill Legacy
10.02.12 |
When it came time to apply to college, there was only one option for Kirstin Luckenbill ’16. She visited three schools but submitted her only application to Lebanon Valley College, following in the footsteps of her father, Brian Luckenbill ’88.

Father and daughter have more in common than choice of college. Brian graduated with a degree in music education with a voice concentration. His daughter shares the same major with the same concentration but with ambitions of expanding to piano.

“We’re very into music,” Brian said. “I’ve been into music all my life. When I went to college, I didn’t look at any college other than Lebanon Valley either. I heard that Lebanon Valley was great for music. It wasn’t far from my home. That’s how I decided.”

“His stories definitely influenced me, but he wasn’t the only reason I came here,” Kirstin said. “My parents didn’t pressure me to come here – though they were obviously thrilled that I was going to come here. They wanted me to apply to more than one school, but I just didn’t want that.”

At home and in church, Kirstin either sings or plays flute in accompaniment to Brian’s piano playing. Though he did not end up teaching music professionally, Brian serves as director of music in his church and works as a third grade teacher.

Kirstin aspires to someday teach private lessons in a studio setting. While that goal will require a great deal of real-world experience, she is consistently building her résumé. In high school, she was involved in chorus, band, musical, show choir, county chorus, and the National Honor Society. “I’ve looked into a lot of activities on campus already, but I’m trying not to overload myself right away,” she said. “I’m in concert choir and marching band, but I’m still looking for things to get involved in.”

Kirstin is one of 18 legacy students to come to LVC this fall – each with one or both of their parents listed among LVC’s alumni. Though she also has friends who have graduated from the College, her father’s remains the most trusted voice when Kirsten wants to hear about college life and LVC history.

“It was really a lot of fun,” Brian said. “We’d be with a tour guide going around. The guide would say something, and I’d have to interject. I had to let them know different things about when I was there. It was a lot of fun.”

Legacy students at LVC also benefit from the Children of Alumni Award – a scholarship program that grants $2,500 per year, for a maximum per-student benefit of $10,000 over the course of four years.
