Meet Justin Morell, New Assistant Professor of Music at LVC
10.04.13 |
Q: What classes will you be teaching at LVC?
A: I am teaching Music Theory I, Aural Theory III, and several composition students in private instruction.

Q: What is your educational background and music industry experience?
A: I have a BA from UCLA, a MA from California State University East Bay, and a Ph.D. from University of Oregon, each with an emphasis in music composition. In addition to composing concert music, I play guitar and have performed with many wonderful (mostly jazz) musicians from across the country and around the world. While I was living in Los Angeles, I led several ensembles, owned a recording studio, and played guitar on television and film projects.

Q: What is your first impression of Central Pa.?
A: Having lived most of my life on the West Coast, and having spent the last year in Atlanta, I am very impressed with Central Pa.—the beautiful fields, the wonderful people on and around campus, some great food and farmer's markets... and though I haven't yet experienced the cold of a Pennsylvania winter, I suspect it's worth it for the fall and spring!

Q: What excites you about teaching at The Valley?
A: First, I am excited to be in the classroom with so many great, enthusiastic, hard-working, and dedicated music students. I know students at LVC have a LOT to do during the term, and I am very impressed with their positive attitude toward their studies and extracurricular activities. And second, I am deeply humbled to be in the company of such esteemed faculty campus-wide. The faculty at LVC certainly set the bar high, and it's exciting to try to live up to that standard.

Q: Tell us something interesting about yourself – crazy hobby? Weird talent?
A: Crazy hobby? Does building my own guitar effect pedals count as crazy? I actually love building things, especially furniture, though I don't have the tools around to do it these days—nor the time.

Q: What events are you looking forward to attending on campus this fall?

A: I have a list of events in my calendar, and posted on the wall in my office, but a couple that I was really looking forward to were the “American Algorists” exhibit, and the concert featuring the music of Scott Eggert in September.
