How to Pack for College
08.06.12 |
Members of the Class of 2016 will be flooding campus in the next few weeks as they begin a new chapter of their lives. Moving away from home and into college is exciting but also daunting. With the move comes apprehension about living with a roommate, sharing a bathroom, and knowing what to pack. Hopefully the following tips will alleviate a few worries about what to bring with you on move-in day.

First and foremost, talk to your roommate before buying everything on your list. Residential life staff member Leah Leddy said, “We strongly encourage roommates to discuss the big ticket items, like the microwave and fridge, because only one of each is allowed per room.” Speaking with your roommate before move-in day can also be helpful to learn about the person you’ll be sharing a space with. It will lessen the initial awkwardness that comes from living with a new person.

After talking with your future roommate, you will have a better idea of what you do not need to pack. It is good to remember that less is more. At first bring only the essentials, a list that can be found here. It’s easy to go to the nearby shopping centers to pick up extra items later. “Every year when I’m moving out for the summer, I realize that I brought an abundance of things that I simply did not need,” reflected resident assistant Tito Valdes ’14, “I end up bringing less every time I come back to campus.”

To make your new room feel like home, a few items will go a long way. A curtain rod and colorful curtains for your window will soften the space and an area rug will make the whole room feel cozier. Corkboards fill wall space and can be useful to post reminders and calendars. Posters and photos of friends and family help to make the space your own. Include talking about how you’d like to decorate in your conversation with your roommate.
