Lebanon Valley College Welcomes Nearly 500 New Students at Orientation Weekend
08.15.13 |
Lebanon Valley College will welcome nearly 500 new students Aug. 23 for Orientation Weekend; three days of activities and events to introduce these new Dutchmen to the Annville campus and inspire them to “Dream Big, Aim High, and Laugh Hard,” according to this year’s theme. In a change from traditional scheduling, Move-In Day and Convocation will take place on Friday, Aug. 23.

“Orientation is an exciting experience that introduces new students to all aspects of campus life,” said Todd Snovel, associate director of student activities and engagement and Orientation coordinator. “The jam-packed weekend of events is led by dedicated staff and extensively trained student leaders who are ready to welcome the newest members to our community. Orientation programs are designed to ease new students’ transitions into college and prepare them for academic, social, and personal success.”

Residence halls open for new students Aug. 23 from 8 a.m. to noon, and LVC student-athletes and members of various student organizations will be on hand to carry boxes, refrigerators, televisions, and more to the students' rooms. This year's incoming students represent 16 states, although almost 400 of the new students hail from Pennsylvania.

A favorite LVC tradition, the Water Ceremony takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Peace Garden. New students bring a small amount of water representative of home, pour it in one of four urns that have been placed in the Peace Garden, and sign the registry. Once collected, all water is poured into the pond as a symbol of the support of the extended community.

New students and their families will mark the formal opening of the 2013–2014 academic year at Opening Convocation at 1:30 p.m. in the Arnold Sports Center Arena. Student Government officers will lead incoming students through a receiving line of Lebanon Valley College's faculty, administration, and trustees in full academic regalia. Opening Convocation will be streamed live at www.lvc.edu/LVCtv.

On Sunday, Aug. 25, the new students will complete their first community service project as members of the Class of 2017. A program involving the entire incoming class working at 15 different stations has been designed in support of LVC's goal to "prepare students for a life of service to others," a key tenet of the College's mission statement. The projects will take place in the Arnold Sports Center Arena from 2:30-4:30 p.m.

In a new LVC tradition, President Lewis Evitts Thayne, Ph.D., and his wife, Dorry, will welcome the new students to campus for a “Picnic with the President.” All will enjoy food, activities, and a chance to be personally welcomed to campus by Dr. Thayne. Students will gather in the Arnold Sports Center at 4:45 p.m. and will walk as a group to the president's home at Kreiderheim for the 5 p.m. picnic.
