This year marks the 40th year of men’s soccer at Lebanon Valley College. There is a full slate of special events planned to introduce program alumni to current student-athletes over Oktoberfest weekend, Oct. 12-13.

“It is exciting to celebrate 40 years of men’s soccer at Lebanon Valley College,” said Charlie Grimes, LVC’s head coach. “We look forward to many alumni returning to campus, some familiar faces and some we will be meeting for the first time. It will be special to have some of the members of the very first men’s soccer team present with us.”

On Friday, the athletic department will hold its third annual LVC Golf Classic at Fairview Golf Course in Lebanon. Program alumni can participate if they register in advance of the event by contacting Rick Beard at rbeard@lvc.edu.

Saturday opens with the Alumni Soccer Pickup Game at the Herbert Practice Fields at noon. All alumni are invited to participate, while friends and family are encouraged to come to the fields to cheer from the sidelines. At 2 p.m., there will be an alumni tailgate celebration in the parking area between McGill Baseball Park and Herbert Field, leading into LVC’s homecoming game with Messiah. Anyone interested in participating in either the pickup game or the tailgate can contact assistant men’s soccer coach Tim Mehl ’09 for additional information at tjm002@lvc.edu.

At 3 p.m., LVC will play conference rivals Messiah at Herbert Field. Visiting alumni will be introduced during halftime with a special introduction of the inaugural 1973 team.

The 1973 team’s honors will extend into the Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony, where they will be the ceremonial team of honor. While no individual member of the team will be inducted this year, the team will be recognized for bringing men’s soccer to LVC. The cost of attending the event is $32 per person. Past inductees receive a $10 discount. To register for the event or for additional information about Oktoberfest Weekend, visit http://www.lvc.edu/alumni/OKT12.aspx

"After 40 years, I feel proud to have been part of the foundation of a team that is now regularly competitive and often celebrated," said Lamar Styer M.D. '76, who captained the inaugural team. "May I also say that LVC gave me an excellent education and many fond memories."

“We always tell our guys that it is a privilege to be able to play soccer at Lebanon Valley College,” Grimes said. “We look at it as a family, and it will be a special weekend to have so many members of the family together.”
