HAPPINESS Colloquium Presents Harvard Professor to Discuss Money and Happiness Feb. 5
02.01.13 |
Harvard Business School professor Michael I. Norton will discuss research that suggests money can make a person happy in his presentation, “Money and Happiness, Giving and Getting” Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in Lebanon Valley College’s Zimmerman Recital Hall of the Suzanne H. Arnold Gallery.

Norton will explain his theory on how spending money on others can improve people’s moods. His studies reveal that nothing happens to those who spend money on themselves, while those who spend money on others appear to be happier.

Norton’s research has been featured twice in the New York Times Magazine. Because of his insightful ideas, Norton won the Theoretical Innovation Prize from the Society of Personality and Social Psychology, the SAGE Young Scholars Award from the Foundation for Social and Personality Psychology, and a position on the list of Wired Magazine’s “50 People Who Will Change the World.” In addition to being an associate professor of business administration at Harvard Business School, he is co-author of the forthcoming book, “Happy Money: The Science of Smarter Spending,”, which will be released this spring.

HAPPINESS is a year-long integrated series of guest speakers, roundtable discussions, films and courses that will consider the meaning and importance of happiness as a psychological, physiological, social and cultural phenomenon. It involves presentations by speakers from a number of disciplines who approach the theme from the standpoints of the arts, the wellness of body and mind, the demands of a consumer economy, the expectations and duties of political life, and the broad philosophical questions of human flourishing.
