Leadership Institute Seminars and Portfolio Completion Process
This fun and innovative program provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their leadership-related experiences and increase their personal skills. The program invites outside speakers to present sessions on a broad range of topics. A capstone portfolio is an opportunity for students to display leadership learning and activities in one place. The portfolio should demonstrate that students are equipped with the superior knowledge, skills, perspectives, and experiences associated with leadership development. Students completing the program will earn a certificate in leadership from the Division of Student Affairs
Students must attend a minimum of ten leadership seminars to attain certification during the 2013-2014 academic year. A student may submit for approval activities outside of the scheduled programs to count toward their total. Programs may include speakers, colloquium events, cultural events, or other-high impact activities completed on or off campus.

Portfolios will be presented to a panel of educators during the spring semester. Leadership certificates will be awarded at the Spring Student Affairs Awards Ceremony.

Introduction and Leadership Statement (300-500 words)

Good question. We know that you, as students, have very full plates. However, the Leadership Institute is a personal investment in your future. The Institute will provide you with opportunities to explore, practice, and hone your leadership skills in order to make a life-long positive impact on your career, your community, and the world.
What will I gain from this program?
First and foremost, you will experience personal enrichment and growth. Through a process of self-discovery, reflection, skill building, and learning, you will further realize your own unique sense of self and purpose.
The program certification will be a point of interest to employers and community groups. Remember, you will be graduating with the same degree as several others throughout the nation. The Institute is one way of differentiating yourself and showing your personal commitment to leadership.
What am I going to learn?
The Leadership Institute is grounded in a series of learning goals. Throughout the sessions and activities, you will learn in the following areas:
What are the main requirements?
- Critical Thinking - Students will evaluate and synthesize information from multiple sources and perspectives to make informed decisions and solve problems.
- Communication - Students will present and evaluate information, as well as present ideas clearly and effectively with diverse audiences in a variety of situations.
- Self-Awareness - Students will develop an awareness of and appreciation for personal strengths, values, and leadership styles, and will cultivate the ability to use this knowledge for future learning and growth.
- Social Responsibility – Students will enhance their lives by engaging in actions that reflect an understanding of the values of service, citizenship, and social responsibility, and demonstrate an understanding of their roles and impacts in local and global communities.
- Inclusiveness - Students will acquire knowledge and appreciation of the diversity of human cultural, historical and social experiences, and be able to reflect on how individual life experience relates to the complex nature of the human condition.
Requirements include attending ten leadership sessions and the completion of the leadership portfolio. An explanation of all of these components can be found on the Portfolio and Completion Process document.
What if I can’t get to ten sessions? Are there any alternative options?
Sure, we can to be flexible and let this program be beneficial for you. You must attend some of the Leadership Institute-sponsored workshops. They are offered throughout the semester on various days and times. If your schedule does not permit to attend these seminars, you may fulfill some of the requirements by attending other programs.
These must be approved by Todd Snovel and can include options such as speakers, colloquium events, cultural events, or high-impact activities completed either on or off campus.
