SPA 101.Elementary Spanish I. Introductory course in Spanish. Aimed at developing basic communicative proficiency in Spanish. Also offers insights into Hispanic cultures.  Fulfills general education requirement: Foreign Language. 3 credits.

SPA 102.Elementary Spanish II. Second half of the introductory course.  Fulfills general education requirement: Foreign Language. Prerequisite: SPA 101 or equivalent. 3 credits.

SPA 201.Intermediate Spanish I. Begins with a review of material typically covered in a first-year Spanish course followed by further development of proficiency in all four language skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing. Also aims to enhance students' knowledge of the cultures of Hispanic peoples.  Fulfills general education requirement: Foreign Language. Prerequisite: SPA 102 or equivalent. 3 credits.

SPA 202.Intermediate Spanish II. Second half of the intermediate course.  Fulfills general education requirement: Foreign Language. Prerequisite: SPA 201 or equivalent. 3 credits.

SPA 300.Advanced Conversation. Intensive practice in spoken Spanish. Discussions on a wide range of topics related to Spanish and Latin American life and contemporary society.  Prerequisite: SPA 202 or equivalent. 3 credits.

SPA 310.Advanced Grammar and Composition. Discussion of more complex grammatical structures. Intensive practice in written Spanish. Development of advanced writing skills through composition assignments based on contemporary issues.  Fulfills general education requirement: Writing Process. Prerequisite: SPA 202 or equivalent. 3 credits.

SPA 320.Business Spanish. A study of the language of business and business practices.  Prerequisite: SPA 202 or equivalent. 3 credits.

SPA 340.The Sounds of Spanish. A course in phonetics and phonology designed to help students acquire standard pronunciation and intonation.  3 credits.

SPA 350.Spanish Culture and Civilization. An overview of Spanish culture, history and geography, with special focus on current issues.  Prerequisite: SPA 202 or equivalent. 3 credits.

SPA 360.Latin-American Cultures and Civilizations. An overview of Latin American cultures, history, and geography, with special focus on current issues.  Fulfills general education requirement: Foreign Studies. Prerequisite: SPA 202 or equivalent. 3 credits.

SPA 370.Techniques of Translation and Interpretation. Studies methods of translation and interpretation. Oral and written texts will be used to work both from Spanish to English and English to Spanish.  Prerequisite: SPA 202 or equivalent. 3 credits.

SPA 410.Spanish Literature of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. A study of the outstanding works of the period.   Fulfills general education requirement: Writing Process. Liberal Studies Area 5 (Literature and Fine Art). Prerequisite: SPA 202 or equivalent. 3 credits.

SPA 420.Spanish Literature of the Golden Age. A study of the major works of the period.  Fulfills general education requirement: Writing Process. Liberal Studies Area 5 (Literature and Fine Art). Prerequisite: SPA 202 or equivalent. 3 credits.

SPA 430.Spanish Literature of the 18th and 19th Centuries. Readings from the Enlightenment in Spain and an examination of the major works of romanticism and realism.  Fulfills general education requirement: Writing Process. SPA 440.Spanish Literature of the 20th and 21st Centuries. A study of the literary movement of the century, starting with the Generation '98 and modernism.  Fulfills general education requirement: Writing Process. SPA 450.Latin-American Literature of the 20th and 21st Centuries. A study of significant writers of each century, with emphasis on recent developments.  Fulfills general education requirement: Writing Process.
