GMN 101. Elementary German I.   Introductory course in German. Aimed at developing basic communicative proficiency in German. Also offers insights into German-speaking cultures. 3 credits.

GMN 102. Elementary German II.   Second semester of introductory course in German. 3 credits.

GMN 201. Intermediate German I.   Reviews topics typically covered in a first-year German course and continues to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing while exploring the cultures of German-speaking people. Prerequisite: GMN 102 or equivalent. 3 credits.

GMN 202. Intermediate German II.   Second semester of intermediate German. Prerequisite: GMN 102 or equivalent. 3 credits.

GMN 300. Advanced Conversation.   Intensive practice in spoken German. Discussions on a wide range of topics related to German life and contemporary society. Prerequisites: GMN 202 or equivalent. 3 credits

GMN 301. Advanced Grammar and Composition.   Intensive practice in written German. Development of advanced writing skills through composition assignments based on contemporary German writing and issues. Prerequisite: GMN 202 or equivalent. 3 credits.

GMN 305. Summer Study in Germany.   This 4-week, 300-level language and culture course in Wurzburg, Germany is for students with intermediate to advanced knowledge of German, and is taught by German faculty from Lebanon Valley College and Hillsdale College, Michigan. It combines daily intensive classroom instruction with organized cultural activities and excursions. Students strengthen conversational and compositional skills through analysis of significant historical and current issues in German society. Class work also emphasizes practice with idiomatic expressions and expansion of vocabulary. In addition to examining various media (press, television, film, music) students read a major literary work in German. Excursions include visits to cultural sites in Wurzburg and the surrounding region, including Berlin and Munich. Language of instruction is German. Prerequisite: GMN 202 or equivalent, or permission of the instructor. 4 credits.

GMN 310. Germany Past and Present.   Studies the major epochs of German cultural history and describes the chief characteristics of persent-day German society. Prerequisite: GMN 202 or equivalent. 3 credits.

GMN 320. Business German.   A study of the language of business and business practices of Germany and German-speaking countries. Prerequisite: GMN 202 or equivalent. 3 credits.

GMN 340. The Sounds of German.   A listening comprehension class presenting spoken German from a variety of sources and in various registers. In addition, the course introduces Germanic linguistics and the comparative phonetics of English and German. Prerequisite: GMN 202 or equivalent. 3 credits.

GMN 350. German Culture and Civilization.   Study of major issues (e.g. democracy, the media) from various points of view. Prerequisite: GMN 202 or equivalent. 3 credits.

GMN 410. Readings in German.   A survey of German culture and civilization including history, music, art, literature, and philosophy. Prerequisite: GMN 311 or 316 or permission. 3 credits.

GMN 460. Lyric Poetry.   A study of German song from minnesang to comtemporary rock and hip-hop. Involves both texts and music as appropriate. Prerequisite: GMN 202 or equivalent. Writing process. 3 credits.
