Secondary Education Teacher Certification
Students interested in pursuing secondary teaching certification must complete an
intensive program which combines a chosen departmental major(s) with carefully selected
education courses. Departmental majors may be certified in
Art, Biology,
Chemistry, English,
French,
German, Spanish,
Mathematics, Music, Physics, Social
Science and
Citizenship Education.
Opportunities are provided for candidates to observe and teach in middle school
and high school settings prior to full-time teaching.
Dual certification, at both the elementary and secondary levels, or in more than
one secondary area is possible. However, such certification requires meticulous
attention to scheduling and often requires an additional semester or two.

Secondary certification for Art, French, German, Spanish, and Music include K-12 certification.
