Bachelor of Science in Middle Level Education - Grade 4-8
The Middle Level certification program is in the development and approval process
and is planned to be complete by the Fall 2010 semester. Students with an interest
in teaching grades 4-8 should enroll as open majors starting in fall 2009 and begin
coursework that is expected to count as part of the proposed Middle Level major.
The Pennsylvania Department of Education has established multiple pathways to this
certification. Candidates for this certification must take courses in Education,
Science, Mathematics, English and Language Arts, and Social Studies. Each candidate
will need to specialize in two of four content areas (Science, Mathematics, English
and Language Arts, Social Studies). The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires
that one of these two concentration areas be either Science or Mathematics. In addition,
each Middle Level candidate will spend at least one hundred ninety hours working
in public school classroom settings prior to their student teaching semester.
