Internship Testimonials

Heidi Allison

Major: Digital Communications (Business Concentration) and Business Administration

Hometown: Indiana, PA

What would you like to do when you graduate?
At this time, I am unsure of exactly what I want to do when I graduate but I am looking into the areas of finance, human resources, and advertising. Eventually, I would like to become an upper-level manager within a medium to large sized company.

What is/was your official title for your internship?
Trade Management Intern with The Hershey Company. My basic responsibilities include pulling monthly reports from Siebel and SAP software systems; communicating customer reviews to customer sales executives; and pulling various types of reports and analyzing the data on an as needed basis.

What was it in your program that helps/ed you perform in your internship (or helped you land the internship)?
There are many different parts of the program that have helped me land and perform in my internship. Some of the most beneficial classes that have helped me include Networking and Databases, Writing for Digital Media and Business of Information. Since I use various databases on a daily basis, understanding how databases work and can be used for has helped me tremendously. I have used the skills and techniques I learned from Writing for Digital Media when I communicate to various people within the organization through sending emails and attending meetings. Also, my internship is based heavily on finance and math so my double major in business has provided me with the additional skills needed for this internship.

Dan Kruse

What would you like to do when you graduate?
I wish to work as a Web developer or project manager.

What is/was your official title for your internship?
Web Development Intern for VerbComm, Inc. I was responsible for creating Web site designs, coding Web templates, building databases, and creating content management systems.

What was it in your program that helps/ed you perform in your internship (or helped you land the internship)?
My internship was highly art and computer science based. I had completed 2-Dimensional Design, Digital Graphic Design, and Computer Applications, and therefore, was able to leverage the skills I had developed in those portions of the program. Also, Writing for Digital Media II provided me with project management skills that proved to be invaluable at my internship.

What was you favorite part of your DCOM Experience so far?
The professors are excellent. The classes are interesting. I think my favorite part of the DCOM is that I have been allowed to do things I never thought were possible.

What advice can you give potential DCOM students?

The program is what you make of it. Don't just take the classes and pass the tests, learn outside of the classroom. Read about what is happening in the industry. Make it your job to figure out how things work and why. Don’t waste this opportunity.
