Get Involved and Jump Start Your Career
Submitted by Frank Sisolak IV 09, Accounting Major

I went into Lebanon Valley College as a math major. However, I am now a graduate in the accounting profession, while trying to get my CPA in the next two years. A lot changes in the four years you go to college. And in the end, those four years guide you into a profession.

The only problem is that a business and accounting degree can lead you into many directions to start your career—marketing, sales representative, financial analyst, accountant, etc. So, how do you know what you like and what interests you? Most students do not know, yet LVC’s Business Department takes advantage of that opportunity.

LVC’s Business Department offers many opportunities to get involved while taking classes. The department offers programs, such as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, Phi Beta Lambda (Business Club), Accounting Club, and Rotaract. After participating in three of these clubs, I was able to differentiate myself as a student and decide what career options interested me.

Also, the department works well with the Career Service Office in getting students involved with internships. I had an internship during my senior year, and it helped me decide what field I would choose for my career. I suggest that all LVC students experience at least one internship. This experience gives you a sense of what the real world is like. It also helps develop your resume, which is crucial when applying for jobs after graduation.

It seems like it was yesterday that I was starting my freshman year at LVC. Those fast four years helped develop me into the person I am now and led me to the start of my accounting career. Overall, my advice to you is to get involved, be active, and most importantly, have fun. College is the best time of your life, so enjoy it before you get to the “real world.”
