Student Internship Projects, 2011 Awards

Christa Levko – Junior Majoring in Political Science
Internship at the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington's Center for Advancing Justice, Washington, D.C
Christa Levko has been accepted into the ten and a half week internship program at the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington's Center for Advancing Justice in Washington, D.C. for the summer of 2011. She is hoping to be involved with activist work with either a non-profit organization or a law office. Christa’s career aspiration is to work in the realm of equality legislation in Washington. She is currently president of Freedom Rings – the LVC Gay-Straight Alliance, has been inducted into the social justice honor society – Pallas, and participates in the EDGE Leadership Program. Professor Philip Benesch is her advisor and mentor for this internship experience.

Caitlin Murphy: Junior Majoring in English and International Studies
Internship at the Center for European Studies at the University of Maastricht, Netherlands
Caitlin will intern with the Center for European Studies at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands for 6-8 weeks. After an LVC study abroad experience in Maastricht last summer, she decided to add a major in International Studies to her English major. Caitlin is passionate about the transformative experience that can come from studying abroad. She plans to pursue a career in the realm of international studies or study abroad administration. Caitlin currently works in the Office of Study Abroad at LVC, is a staff writer and features editor for La Vie Collegiene and is captain of the LVC Women’s Varsity Basketball team. She has also been active with Habitat for Humanity, Rotary club, Special Olympics and is publicity chair for the Hearts for Haiti Service Project. Professors Marie Bongiovanni, Chris Dolan and Walter Labonte are her mentors for this internship experience.

Daniel Ramirez-Bao: Junior Majoring in Biology
Research Internship at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Spain
Daniel will be conducting research in plant physiology in the laboratory of Dr. Ignacio Zarra Cameselle through a 9-week internship experience at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Specifically, he will be working on Tobacco and Arabidopsis plants utilizing DNA extraction and amplification by PCR, enzymatic digestions, and molecular cloning. Daniel also plans to take this opportunity to improve his speaking fluidity with the Spanish language. He is a Spanish peer tutor at LVC, he is vice president of the Spanish Club, and is a Residential Life Assistant. Professors Dale Erskine and Robert Carey are his mentors for the project.

Melissa Zellner – Sophomore Majoring in Historical Communications
Internship at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission
Melissa’s twelve-week internship at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in Harrisburg will support her career aspirations with archives and museum work. She has already had experience as a student researcher with Professor Michael Schroeder on the Sandino Rebellion in Nicaragua and is a student editor with the Valley Humanities Review project. Professor John Hinshaw is her mentor and advisor for this internship experience.
