Supporting Students Far from Home
08.28.13 |
LVC’s Office of Multicultural Affairs serves as a home base for international students even before they set out for Annville. The office becomes involved early on, helping students with immigration procedures and matching them with host families who can provide housing and a sense of home during semester breaks. Special outings and orientation sessions help international students get settled on campus, and counseling and advising services are available as needed.

“The services provided for international students are not vastly different than the services we provide for domestic students,” says Venus Ricks, LVC’s director of multicultural affairs. “The unique parts have to do with their visas and the like. Outside of this, there are transitional needs pertaining to homesickness, getting around, and food. We all have our comfort foods that remind us of home!”

Ricks hopes to see LVC’s community of international students continue to grow, as she believes these students are central to the College’s role: “LVC’s mission is to prepare students for a diverse and changing world as well as developing global citizens,” she says. “This is challenging to do if our student population does not include individuals from different regions, both international and domestic.”
