Lebanon Valley College will induct seven alumni into the Athletic Hall of Fame as its Class of 2012 as part of the Oct. 12 and 13 Oktoberfest Weekend festivities. Lora Zimmerman Boozer '01, Greg Hessinger, Esq. '87, Mark Hofsass '95, Patrick Loughney '99, the late Frank Shupper '46, Natalie Baruka Smith '97, and Joann Giannettino Snider '90 will be honored at a banquet Oct. 13, making up the 37th class inducted to the Hall since 1976.
The purpose of the Lebanon Valley College Athletic Hall of Fame is to recognize those individuals who, through participation, support, or interest have made outstanding contributions to Lebanon Valley College athletics. These individuals have helped bring recognition, honor, distinction, and excellence to Lebanon Valley College and its intercollegiate athletics program.
Lora Zimmerman Boozer '01 - Field Hockey / Women's Basketball
A two-time all-American in field hockey, Lora Zimmerman Boozer '01 was a key player for the successful LVC teams in the late 1990s that include a trip to the 1997 NCAA Final Four. She led the Dutchmen to two conference championships, scoring 126 career points on 56 goals and 14 assists - just the fourth LVC player at that point to cross the century mark in points. She still ranks ninth on LVC's points lists and fifth in goals. After her senior year she was selected to the NFHCA North/South All-Star Game and won LVC's Women's Sportsmanship Award. Boozer was also a sharpshooter for the women's basketball team, and still holds the career record for free throw percentage (.813) and three-pointers made in a game (6).
Greg Hessinger, Esq. '87 - Football
LVC's second-leading tackler of all-time, Greg Hessinger '87 was a standout linebacker for the Valley in the 1980s. Hessinger's 452 career stops between 1983 and 1986 remain second in the record books 26 years later, and his 163 tackles in the 1984 season ranks in the top five. A two-time team MVP, Hessinger is the only LVC student-athlete to win the Chuck Maston, John Zola, and Scott Wallace awards. He also captained coach Jim Monos' first LVC team in 1986.
Mark Hofsass '95 - Men's Basketball
A starter for the 1994 NCAA Division III national championship team, Mark Hofsass '95 was a 1,000-point scorer and all-conference player for the men's basketball program. Hofsass scored 1,044 career points, and is LVC's all-time leader in shooting percentage, making an incredible 65.5% of his shots. He also holds the season shooting percentage record at 67.4%, set during his freshman season of 1991-92. His 567 records ranks sixth, and his 123 blocks are third. Hofsass captained the 1994-95 MAC champion team, earning all-MAC honors as a senior. Hofsass is a fixture in local high school basketball as the head coach at Lower Dauphin since 2007 and the head coach at Palmyra prior to that.
Patrick Loughney '99 - Men's Track & Field
An All-American javelin thrower for the track & field program, Patrick Loughney '99 still remains one of the top throwers in LVC history. Loughney earned an all-America finish at the 1998 NCAA national championship meet, and his personal best 199-2 mark in the javelin remains sixth-best in LVC history. He was a two-time nationals qualifier (1998 and 1999) and was also LVC's hammer throw recordholder until 2004 at 119-9 (he is sixth today). He won a MAC title in javelin with two all-conference finishes.
Frank Shupper '46 - Football / Men's Basketball / Baseball
The late Frank Shupper '46 holds a unique place in LVC athletics as the only player-coach in men's basketball history. A standout player in the pre- and post-war years, Shupper played football and men's basketball and excelled at both. Prior to World War II, Shupper was twice the leading scorer for the basketball team, including a 27-point game to beat F&M. In 1945-46 after the reformation of the team, Shupper played as a senior and also coached the squad to its best record in years, going 11-3. His football career was cut short as the war caused the program to disband, but he was named team MVP in his one season as the team's leading scorer, rusher, passer, and kicker. He also briefly played baseball at LVC and ended up playing four years in the New York Yankees' minor league system.
Natalie Baruka Smith '97 - Volleyball
Lebanon Valley's first volleyball inductee, Natalie Baruka Smith '97 was a record-setting hitter for the team in the mid-1990s. Fifteen years after graduating, Smith is still LVC's all-time blocks leader, stuffing 380 shots between 1993 and 1996, including 222 solo stops. Baruka graduated as LVC's all-time kills leader (1,284), a record that stood until 2004. She was a two-time all-conference selection, captain, and team MVP, and led the Dutchmen to 90 wins in her career.
Joann Giannettino Snider '90 - Women's Track & Field / Cross Country
Joann Giannettino Snider '90 was a standout for the LVC track & field and cross country teams, winning MAC championships in multiple events during her career. Quite possibly LVC's all-time meet point-scoring leader, Snider competed and excelled at the long jump, triple jump, sprint and intermediate hurdles, and sprints and relays, all while running cross country in the fall. She won indoor and outdoor MAC titles in the long jump and the outdoor 400m hurdles, and as a junior and senior, she would routinely compete (and score) in eight or nine events per meet.
