LVC Reflects on Jersey Shore Music Culture to Prepare for Spring Break Trip
02.01.13 |
Lebanon Valley College will continue its "Down the Shore" series of culture-based conversations about the Jersey Shore Tuesday, February 5 at 11 a.m. in the Miller Chapel Lobby. The events are held in advance of a spring break volunteer trip to clean and rebuild the areas of the shore affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The conversations are free and open to the public and a light pizza lunch will be provided. Community members interested in attending should register by calling 717-867-6135 or emailing nsmith@lvc.edu.

This particular "Down the Shore" multimedia event will be led by Bill Allman, Metz Culinary Management general manager and native of the Jersey Shore.

"When we talk about these influential musicians, students get the sense of the contributions they have made for the area," said Paul Fullmer, chaplain at Lebanon Valley College and director of community service. "Bruce Springsteen wrote several songs about the area and Bon Jovi has a restaurant there."

A total of 35 LVC students will travel to Point Pleasant, N.J., with the Camp-Hill based volunteer organization Lend A Hand at the beginning of their spring break in early March.

"Knowing about the culture and context in which they are serving greatly enriches their trip," said Fullmer. "When they have a sense for the broader context, they might consider questions like, 'What is the role of volunteerism?' in a public disaster?"

Fullmer added, "We encourage reflection on a broader context that way, perhaps they will go on to do bigger and better things as they continue through life."
