04.18.13 |
Lebanon Valley College's annual Evening of Woodwinds concert will take place Tuesday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Lutz Hall of the Blair Music Center. The concert will feature the College's clarinet ensemble, directed by Beverly Butts; the flute ensemble, directed by Michelle Barraclough; and the saxophone ensemble, directed by Tom Strohman. The LVC Woodwind Quintet will also perform. The performance is free and open to the public.

The 22-member clarinet ensemble will play "La Forza Del Destino (The Force of Destiny)" by Giuseppe and arranged by Paul Harvey; "St. Paul's Suite" including "Vivace," "Ostinato," "Intermezzo," and "The Dargason" by Gustave Holst and translated by Matt Johnston; and "Rolling Thunder" by Henry Fillmore and translated by Matt Johnston. The clarinet ensemble's director, Butts, is an adjunct instructor of music at LVC.

The LVC flute ensemble, made up of students from diverse majors, will perform "Chats" by Berthomieu, a piece that describes different kinds of cats, and "Of Wizards and Witches" by Phyllis Louke, a multi-movement work that reminds one of a boy wizard from books and movies. The flute ensemble is under the direction of Barraclough, an adjunct instructor of music.

Under the direction of Strohman, professor of music, the eight-member saxophone ensemble will perform two movements from "Second Saxophone Quartet" by Gordon Jacob; "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" by Wolfgang Mozart and arranged by Rosemary Lange; "Difference of Opinion" by Robert Roden; and "Bluesminded" by Fritz Pauer.

The Woodwind Quintet, also under the direction of Butss, will perform three pieces at the concert, including "The Russian Bear" by Karen Gorton; "Quintet" by Paul Taffanel; and "Presto" by Joseph Haydn.
