Digital Communications Majors Choose New Video Concentration
08.14.13 |
Students at Lebanon Valley College studying digital communications (DigiCom) will be able to specialize their classroom experience with a new video concentration.

Dr. Jeff Ritchie, chair of the Digital Communications Department and associate professor of digital communications, describes the purpose of the video concentration “to give students depth in video and motion graphics. While all DigiCom students will be introduced to videography and post-production as a part of the core curriculum, we expect those students who choose to concentrate in video to refine the skills and methods specific to the medium.”

The specific courses required by this concentration include Videography, Editing and Post Production, and Sound Design. Additional courses offered by the department also pertain to video, such as Motion Graphics.

“Video is now in the DNA of digital, interactive, and networked communications,” Ritchie said. “Many of our recent grads have gone on to work with video, as part of their careers in instructional design, technical communication, or advertising/public relations/communications. From a video training new employees, to instructional videos, to videos that explain an idea or move an audience to action, video has become a more prevalent part of the communications mix.”

“I can't emphasize enough though that the concentration derives its relevance and value in the context of the breadth of the major,” Ritchie continues. “The knowledge and practices in the video concentration are meant to augment and inform those of the core. Students are not going to graduate and start working in Hollywood. That's not how we've designed the concentration. Instead, students will graduate and find communications, advertising, or PR jobs, whose responsibilities require videography and post-production skills, in addition to understanding the basic principles of interaction design, markup and programming, and a background in design.”

In terms of every DigiCom student, video is now becoming more and more relevant. “Even if students never pick up a camera after they graduate, students now must understand the basics of videography, editing, and sequential storytelling, particularly if they are to work in an administrative capacity.”

As the DigiCom major moves forward, Ritchie foresees the program expanding beyond the existing concentrations of Business Technology, Communications, Design, Programming, User Experience and Videography to include more opportunities for students to specialize in different areas.

“DigiCom has long discussed the need for greater collaboration with Music Recording Technology. How rich an exchange our two students could enjoy if we could only engineer an opportunity for DigiCom and MRT students to collaborate on projects together. The sound design course is particularly exciting, as it marks the first of DigiCom's collaboration with Music Recording Technology.”
