Lebanon Valley College to Host Adger Cowans for Art Lecture
02.05.13 |
Lebanon Valley College will host painter and photographer Adger Cowans in a lecture on the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery's current art exhibition, "Gordon Parks: Crossroads" on Thursday, February 7 at 5 p.m. in Zimmerman Recital Hall. The lecture is titled, "A Personal View of Gordon Parks by Adger Cowans." Cowans' lecture is free and open to the public.

After moving to New York, Cowans had the opportunity to work with Life magazine photographer Gordon Parks, who became a lifelong friend. His lecture at LVC will discuss his personal collection of photos of Parks while providing a deeper look at the life, work, and legacy of his beloved friend.

Cowans is renowned in the world of photography and fine art; his works have been shown by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, International Museum of Photography, and the Museum of Modern Art among others.

Parks was one of the first African American photographers to break the color barrier at a major magazine. Throughout his time working for Life magazine, Parks completed more than 300 photo essay assignments, including gang warfare, a Rio slum, a poverty-stricken family in Harlem, fashion, and celebrities.

"Gordon Parks: Crossroads" will be on display through March 17 at the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery. Gallery hours are Wednesdays from 5 to 8 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays from 1 to 4:30 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional information is available at www.lvc.edu/gallery, by emailing gallery@lvc.edu, or by calling 717-867-6445.
