Lebanon Valley College to Host French Philosopher Catherine Malabou
04.03.13 |
French philosopher Catherine Malabou will visit Lebanon Valley College April 10 as part of the College's Symposium on a Living Philosopher, a year-long intensive course and study program. Malabou will present "What is a Psychic Event? Psychoanalysis and Neurobiology on Trauma" in a public lecture at 4:30 p.m. in Miller Chapel 101.

Malabou, a professor in the Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy at Kingston University, is an internationally renowned philosopher who is among the most widely discussed in the world today. Her work is at the nexus of neuroscience, psychoanalysis, philosophy, religion, and feminist theory; she has written numerous books and articles on those subjects.

Select students have spent the full academic year studying and conducting independent research on Malabou's work. A public undergraduate research symposium is scheduled for Thursday, April 11 from 4–6 p.m in the Bishop Library Atrium, followed by a reception from 6:30–9 p.m. in the lobby of Neidig-Garber Science Center. These events are all free and open to the public.

"Catherine Malabou is one of the most original and prolific continental philosophers in the world today," said Dr. Jeffrey Robbins, chair of religion and philosophy, professor of religion, and director of American studies. "The interdisciplinary nature of her philosophy has wide implications not only for contemporary philosophy and religion, but also for neuroscience, feminist studies, and psychoanalytic theory."

The LVC Symposium on a Living Philosopher is funded by the Edward H. Arnold and Jeanne Donlevy Arnold Program for Experiential Education.
