04.22.13 |
To celebrate national Earth Day Monday, April 22, Lebanon Valley College’s Sustainability Committee will host Earth Days 2013. Events for the celebration will begin Sunday, April 21 and end on Wednesday, April 24 with a sustainable lunch hour.

Earth Days kicked off Sunday, April 21 with a showing of “Carbon Nation,” at 3 p.m. in Neidig-Garber 203. The documentary by Peter Byck introduces a number of ways the world’s energy requirement can be met. The first 20 attendees received a free recycled pen.

Monday, April 22 is packed full of sustainability events. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a sustainable trivia prize wheel will be located outside the dining hall in Mund College Center. Participants can answer trivia questions about sustainability and spin the prize wheel. Possible prizes include recycled pens, Frisbees, and reusable bags. A recycling display will also be available to help students brush up on their recycling knowledge.

Later in the day, keynote speaker John Dernbach will speak in his seminar, “Acting as if Tomorrow Matters: Accelerating the Transition to Sustainability” from 7-8 p.m. in Chapel 101. Dernbach is a Distinguished Professor of Law at Widener’s Harrisburg campus. He is the leader of a project called Sustaining America, which reviews sustainable development efforts in the United States and then offers solutions for the future. The first 20 attendees will receive a free sustainability Frisbee.

Before Dernbach’s presentation, the LVC student winner of the “Greening the Campus Contest” will be announced. Students were encouraged to submit proposals about ways LVC can become more sustainable. The winner will receive an iPad mini.

On Tuesday, April 23, Dr. Own Moe, chair and Vernon and Doris Bishop Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, will discuss global warming and greenhouse gases from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Neidig-Garber 203.

Dr. Mike Schroeder, assistant professor of history, will discuss “Rivers of Garbage: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, The Great Atlantic Garbage Patch, and the Lesser Quittapahilla & Swatara Creek Garbage Streams.” The presentation will conclude with a personal tour of the Quittaphailla Creek Garbage Museum and end with a fireside chat on the Cheasapeake Bay Watershed.

To end the week on Wednesday, April 24, the college’s food service provider will host sustainable vendors on campus during lunch hour from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. The vendors will offer samples and information to attendees and the menu will feature 90 percent locally produced and sustainable products.
