Learning the Business of International Trade
08.28.13 |
Business administration major Cody Richard ’14 is in his second semester interning at the World Trade Center of Harrisburg, which helps member companies explore and develop avenues for selling their products abroad.

“I wanted an internship in corporate America that would be very hands-on and where I’d learn a lot, so this has been perfect,” Richard says. “I work with a great variety of businesses. I’ve worked with York Wallcoverings, the world’s largest wallpaper manufacturer. I’ve worked with Martin’s Potato Rolls. I’ve worked with one-person businesses too—all the different extremes, which is really great.”

The Perry County native is happy to be gaining corporate business exposure, since until recently his experience centered more on his parents’ two small family-owned businesses, as well as his own eBay-sales business, which he runs out of his basement at home.

“It started two summers ago, when I began going to flea markets and auctions and purchasing NASCAR items,” he says. “I live in a very rural area so NASCAR items are quite plentiful, and my father used to race professionally, so I used to be obsessed with cars—I knew all the most collectible cars, and I knew who all the top drivers were. I found I could take that knowledge and buy NASCAR collections and then piece them out individually on eBay. It’s not a large gross profit, but I do quite well. In fact if I got out of school and didn’t have a job, I could get by.”

Still, Richard’s World Trade Center internship is positioning him well to not have to depend on eBay for a job after graduation. In addition to learning first-hand what companies need to succeed in an international business, he continually is making contacts with the growing local corporations who turn to the World Trade Center for advice.
