Dr. Roger Nelson, Professor Emeritus, Delivers APTA McMillan Lectureship
07.01.13 |
Congratulations are due to professor emeritus Dr. Roger Nelson, who was awarded the McMillan Lectureship, the highest honor the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) presents to an individual.

In this, the 44th lecture in the series, Dr. Nelson offered his vision for the physical therapy profession's "Next Evolution." As the entire system of American health care is being redefined, physical therapists stand at a crossroads. Will they simply adapt to the changes being imposed upon them, or emerge as a fundamental force in the delivery of a new health care model? Based on his lifelong collaborative work for patient rehabilitation worldwide, Dr. Nelson will define where physical therapists are today -- and how they have carved a path to the future with our focus on the patient. He will present four important, practical tasks that now need to be accomplished -- and the changes that educational institutions and APTA must make -- to establish physical therapy as a driving force for enlightened patient care in an increasingly impersonal health care system.

Roger Nelson, PT, PhD, FAPTA, has served the profession of physical therapy and APTA for more than 46 years, including 25 years as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS). He has created both national and international collaborations for education, research and patient care, and has been instrumental in gaining the recognition of physical therapists as core members of the health care team. Dr. Nelson has served as the physical therapy advisor to the U.S. Surgeon General. Currently vice president of Expert Clinical Benchmarks at MedRisk, Inc., he is professor emeritus at Lebanon Valley College, and a former professor at Thomas Jefferson University. He has been published in peer-reviewed journals more than 53 times, is the author/co-author of three textbooks and has presented in more than 150 scientific sessions worldwide.

Dr. Nelson has served in the APTA House of Delegates, and on the APTA Board of Directors. He chaired the task force to develop APTA's Guide to Physical Therapist Practice.
